This seminar features guided mushroom hunting and identification of saleable, edible and exotic mushroom species. Bring your cameras, since this is also a splendid opportunity to practice your macro photography of forest and meadow mushroom species. Evenings will include slide shows of some of John Harlan's exhaustive mushroom photography, guest lectures, and culinary opportunities with collected edible mushrooms.

Northern California Mushrooms, A Mycologist’s dream
Having spent much of my life in this beautiful area, I arrived last October at MMR to find the most prolific fruiting of mushrooms I had ever seen. MMR is @ the western edge of Siskiyou County in Northern California at an elevation of around 1000’ to 1500’. What makes this place so special? As I continued to try to photograph mushroom specimens and document them on “The Mushroom Observer” web site, I was still amazed at the continual explosion of fungal activity that lasted through December. After thinking about it for a couple of months, my thoughts are that conditions here are optimal. We have ample forest humus under a complete canopy that is mostly shady, we have 60 to 80 inches of rain a year, we have horse trails crisscrossing through the 65 acres of ranch and some of the surrounding US forest Service lands, and we have a resident herd of Roosevelt Elk as well as a deer population. It is a known fact that elk are eager consumers of mushrooms and since spores of different sexes must combine for reproduction to be successful, the elk, horses and other animals along these trails must be aiding in the process.
What a wonderful place this would be for conducting mycological research.
I am looking forward to the spring fruiting like a child on Christmas morning. We are expecting the peak activity to be in April at this elevation.
We are opening the ranch for mycological activities one weekend in April and One weekend in November and arrangements can be made for other time periods if there is sufficient interest.
